How Do You See Takachiho Kagura, and Plan Two Days in Takachiho Without a Car?
This guide is for visitors who want to watch the Takachiho Kagura, the sacred dance of the town, and fit it into a short stay without a car. It uses the Japanese kagura pages of the Takachiho Tourist Association, which we translated, and the English pages of the Visit Miyazaki prefectural site. All pages were read on 2026-10-04.
The short answer
Takachiho Kagura is a one-hour show held every night at the shrine in the town centre, starting at 20:00. It is a shortened version of the village night dances. Book on the association's online site if you can, because the evening can fill up. On the day we read the association's page, 196 of 230 online places were already taken for that night.
What kagura is
The association explains that Takachiho no Yokagura is a ritual in which the village's guardian deity is invited to a private house or community hall and 33 dances are offered through the night. It is performed in about twenty villages from mid-November to early February, and it is designated a nationally important intangible folk cultural property. Because that season is short, the Takachiho Kagura gives visitors a taste all year: four representative dances from the 33, performed by dancers from the villages in turn on the kagura stage in the grounds of Takachiho Shrine. The four are the dances of Tajikarao, Uzume, Totori and the Goshintai.
Time, price and rules
- Show: every night from 20:00 to 21:00 (Visit Miyazaki gives the same time). It is closed on 31 December and 1 January, and normally on 22 and 23 November, when a festival of village kagura is held.
- Fee: 1,000 yen per person, free up to elementary school age, 900 yen each for groups of 20 or more (not for online group bookings). Pets are not admitted.
- Seating: tatami floor. No chairs or cushions are lent, though you may bring your own.
- Photos and video are allowed, but not flash. Outside food and alcohol are not allowed, but water is.
- Parking: about 100 spaces, free.
How to book
The association says there are two ways in. Online booking, with credit card payment in advance, opens at 10:00 thirty days before and closes at 17:00 on the day; it covers 230 places, with up to 10 people per booking. On the day, 50 to 60 places are sold at the shrine's kagura hall from 19:30. Online ticket holders are checked from 19:00 by QR code and sit in the front area, and walk-in visitors sit at the back. The total capacity is around 300. Note that Visit Miyazaki lists a capacity of 120, which differs from these figures, so follow the association's own page.
Two days without a car
Visit Miyazaki's sample course works for visitors using only trains, buses and a rental bicycle:
- Day 1: train from Miyazaki to Nobeoka (about 1 hour 10 minutes), bus to the Takachiho Bus Center (about 80 minutes), then bus to the Iwato stop (about 15 minutes). Lunch in the Iwato area, Amanoiwato Shrine, the nearby Amanoyasukawara cave, then bus back to the bus center. The kagura at 20:00 and a night in town.
- Day 2: by rental electric-assist bicycle or on foot, the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway (about 5 minutes by bicycle from the stay), lunch at the roadside station, then Takachiho Shrine.
The same page tells visitors to check the latest train and bus timetables before leaving, and we agree.
If you come in the Yokagura season
From mid-November to early February the villages hold the full night dances, and the association publishes a separate schedule page for them. The association says the festival day differs from village to village. Because those dances are offered through the night in a private house or community hall, ask the association before you plan to attend one. This guide covers only the nightly show at the shrine.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Whether the show is being held on your date. The association posts changes on its own pages.
- Seat availability. The figure we quote was a snapshot from 4 October.
- The timetable of the Iwato bus, which the sample course does not give.
